  • THE MISERIES
A visit to Guayaquil is never complete without the inevitable photo at Las Peñas. • THE CARNIVAL
The celebration of Carnival has its origin in pagan festivals, such as those that were held in honor of Bacchus, the God of wine, the Saturnalia and the Roman Lupercals or those that were held in honor of the Apis ox in Egypt.

It is celebrated in countries that have a Christian tradition, preceding Lent. The term carnival is supposed to come from the medieval Latin "carnelevarium", which means "to remove meat" which referred to the religious prohibition of meat consumption during the 40 days of Lent.

  • DEADS DAY
Also called the Dia de los Finados, it coincides with the Catholic celebration of All Saints - like other festivities it seems that this celebration is the result of combining an ancient tradition or indigenous rite with a Catholic festival. The celebrations of the Day of the Dead consist of vigils and visits to cemeteries where offerings of flowers and traditional food are brought to the deceased.
Ecuadorians have very traditional foods that are prepared especially for the Day of the Dead: colada morada, a drink made of black or purple corn flour, and guaguas de pan or figures of bread in the shape of a guagua or doll. Guaguas de pan are prepared with a dough of sweet bread, very similar to the dough of French brioche bread, and sometimes they are filled with sweet.
